Healing on Maui Through the Years
Malulani Hospital (Protection of Heaven) was built in 1884. Queen
Kapiolani, who commissioned this Wailuku hospital also requested Franciscan
nuns to run the facility.
- April 24, 1884 Mother Marianne and two Sisters took formal charge of
Malulani Hospital. Later she left to work at the Leper Colony in Kalaupapa.
She and
Father Damien are among the great heroes in Hawaiian history.
1940 Plans were laid for a new, larger hospital that was centrally located,
but it was not until 1952 that the 150 bed hospital became a reality.
- "
Maui is fortunate to have the Territory's most modern general hospital...a
milestone for the health and progress on Maui," said Dr. C.L.
Wilbar, Jr., President of the Territorial Board of Health. The hospital
had 15
doctors and 40 nurses.
- In 1960, Legislative Act 9 mandated the Sate take over governance of Central
Maui Memorial Hospital.
- In 1996, State Legislature passed an Act transferring facilities to the
Hawaii Health Systems Corp. (HHSC), a public benefit corporation. Maui
Medical Center
is a member of HHSC, Maui Region.
- In 1998, the name of the facility was changed from Maui Memorial Hospital to
Maui Memorial Medical Center.
