The holiday spirit was given a special boost at Maui Memorial Medical Center (MMMC) when 30 poinsettia plants were recently donated to the hospital by Pippin Nelson and Caleb Thuro, who are both 8th graders at Haleakala Waldorf School. The plants, which were presented to MMMC Foundation, were donated in the memory of Caleb's grandmother Carol Thuro, who was a patient at MMMC. Thuro was hospitalized on Molokai East and grew very close to her nurses during her stay there before passing away in December of 2003. "The nurses were really great to my grandmother, and they even cried when she died," says Thuro. "That is why we wanted to do something special to honor both of them and cheer other patients too." The plants will be displayed in patient care areas throughout the Molokai East department of the hospital during the holiday season.
