CLIENT: MAUI 'S OWN ROSELANI ICE CREAM FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Maui 's own Roselani Ice Cream has joined forces with the Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation and more than a dozen great island food service establishments in a grassroots breast cancer awareness and education campaign. Throughout the month of October – National Breast Cancer Awareness month – these community-minded businesses will offer Roselani's delicious new flavor, Aloha Cherry Truffle (A.C.T.) ice cream to their patrons and make donations to the specially created local fund. Participating restaurants/parlors are: A.K.'s Café – Wailuku It all began when Roselani's third-generation ice cream maker Cathy Nobriga Kim was diagnosed – extremely early – with breast cancer and wanted to do something to help others in the community combat the fear attached to this disease. “Fear is worse than the disease itself,” says Nobriga Kim “The words ‘breast cancer' are scary and early detection is key. Beginning at age 40, women need to have annual mammograms. I'm living proof that this simple diagnostic test can save your life. Most medical plans cover mammograms; if yours does not, there are community organizations that can help.” “Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation is proud to be partnering with Cathy Nobriga Kim and Roselani Ice Cream on this A.C.T. Sweet promotion,” says Lani Correa, MMMCF executive director. “Our hope is that through our breast cancer education and awareness efforts, our message will resonate within our community that early detection and screening is one of the best ways we can fight this deadly disease.” The special flavor – which also marks Roselani's 75 th Anniversary – was created first, because its pink color reflects the growing national campaign about breast cancer awareness and education. Next, we want women to realize that breast cancer does not discriminate – not by age, race, or status. Most important, we want to remind women throughout Hawai‘i that breast cancer can be beaten. By the way, Aloha Cherry Truffle – cherry-flavored ice cream with black cherry halves and laced with rich chocolate fudge – is also delicious and a great example of Roselani's partnerships with the foodservice community. “We came up with the flavor and Pastry Chef Instructor Teresa ‘Cheech' Shurilla of Maui Community College's Culinary Arts program experimented to come up with the perfect chocolate recipe. Now she and her classes produce all the ‘truffle' for Aloha Cherry Truffle.” Later this year – in time for the holiday season – watch for a beautiful new pink retail 56-oz. carton of Aloha Cherry Truffle in stores statewide. Donations during this campaign will be go to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation, a 501(c) (3) organization, for breast cancer awareness and education.
