Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii - November 28, 2006 Even without the benefit of a medical degree, an enthuusiastic group of participants got to experience first-hand the practice of medicine during Maui Memorial Medical Center's (MMMC) Sixth Annual Internship Program. Held last month at MMMC, this year's program attracted a number of decision makers from the community - Dorin D. Leis of Dorvin D. Leis Co. Inc.; Steve Holaday of Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co.; State Senator Shan Tsutsui; State Representative Kyle Yamashita; Anne Takabuki of Wailea Golf LLC; Fran Peart Mitsumura of First Hawaiian Mortgage Company; and Chiyome Fukino, MD, State of Hawaii Director of Health. An orientation dinner at Dunes at Maui Lani Restaurant kicked off this year's program on October 5th; followed the next day with participants "shadowing" physicians in various departments at MMMC, including emergency room, surgery, internal medicine, urology, oncology, radiology, pathology, just to name a few. The event culminated with a debriefing session where physicians, administrators and interns had a opportunity to discuss their experiences and the challenges and opportunities they forsee for Maui's healthcare industry. MMMC's Internship program was designed to give participants a "window" into the practice of medicine from the perspective of the physician - an experience that fosters goodwill, better communication and an understanding of how our healthcare system works. It also gave participants a glimpse of the exciting changes happening at Maui Memorial Medical Center. "The few hours I spent alongside two of Maui's finest physicians in the ER and ICU departments left a lasting impace on my view of the delivery of medical services," said Wailea Golf LLC president Anne Takabuki. "They were not only extremely intellegent and highly professional, but what left the greatest impression on me was the caring, calm and gentle way in which they treated each patient. It was over all too soon." According to Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation president Dr. Barry Shitamoto "Most people are surprised and impressed by the stat-of-the-art technology now available and how the quality of healthcare has been elevated over the years. This annual internship program is just one of the many ways, Maui Memorial is reaching out to the community to share information on these new advances in healthcare that benefit our local residents and visitors." MMMC's Internship program was sponsored by MMMC and Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation.
